Where it came from
Princess of the Breeze! was produced in 2013 as part of a long-standing tradition of annual feature-length television specials for the Lupin the Third franchise, which first premiered in 1971. Produced by TMS Entertainment, the special was designed to celebrate the property's enduring legacy while refreshing the narrative tone for a contemporary audience. It follows Lupin as he navigates a heist involving the mysterious Princess Lamia in the wind-swept nation of Kushain, maintaining the series' signature blend of globe-trotting caper mechanics and lighthearted action.
The visual direction for this special was overseen by director Takaomi Kanasaki, who sought to balance the classic aesthetics established by Monkey Punch’s original manga with the modernized production standards of early 2010s digital animation. The project aimed to explore themes of political instability and family legacy, framing them through the whimsical lens of a high-stakes treasure hunt. Upon its broadcast, it was generally received by fans as a faithful entry that successfully captured the dynamic interplay between Lupin, Jigen, Goemon, and Fujiko.
