Lupin the 3rd: Sweet Lost Night

Lupin the 3rd: Sweet Lost Night was released in 2008 as the twentieth annual television special for the long-running Lupin the 3rd franchise. Produced by TMS Entertainment, the film was conceived as part of an established tradition of standalone features that premiered on Nippon TV, designed to keep the legacy of Monkey Punch's iconic master thief relevant for contemporary audiences. The story focuses on a memory-erasing device, a plot device that allows the production to explore Lupin's past and relationships with his core crew under the high-stakes pressure of a corporate heist.

The production sought to balance the classic caper-comedy roots of the franchise with updated animation standards typical of late 2000s television specials. Directed by Minoru Ohara, the film maintains the established visual style of the TMS era, characterized by bold line work and vibrant, expressive character designs. Upon its release, it was received as a standard entry in the series, appreciated by longtime fans for its adherence to the traditional dynamics between Lupin, Jigen, Goemon, Fujiko, and Inspector Zenigata.
