Lupin the 3rd: Swallowtail Tattoo

Released in 2004, Lupin the 3rd: Swallowtail Tattoo was produced by TMS Entertainment as the sixteenth installment in the long-running series of annual television specials. It was conceived as part of the studio's strategy to keep the franchise visible during a period of transition for the Lupin property, following the success of the 2003 film Operation: Return the Treasure. The special features a darker, more serious narrative tone that moves away from the lighter, caper-focused episodes of the 1990s, focusing on the character of Zenigata and his history.

The character designs for the special were supervised by Masayuki Hiraoka, who maintained the aesthetic established by the series' long-term evolution while emphasizing a sharper, more dramatic visual style suited to the plot's heavier themes. The story, which centers on a complex plot involving an old friend of Zenigata and a mysterious tattoo, was noted by fans for its attempt to explore Zenigata's backstory. Critical reception at the time was mixed, with some viewers praising the departure from traditional tropes while others found the pacing inconsistent compared to the iconic 1970s and 1980s iterations.
