Where it came from
Macross XX was conceived as a 2002 promotional OVA project, produced by studio GONZO to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the iconic science fiction franchise. Created to serve as a high-concept bridge between established series lore, the project leaned into the aesthetic evolution of the Macross universe by showcasing updated mechanical designs and modern animation techniques that were characteristic of GONZO’s output during that era.
The visual direction for the OVA was intended to capture the frenetic energy of air-to-air dogfights while maintaining the series' signature blend of idol music and mecha warfare. While it was intended as a tribute to the long-standing legacy of Shoji Kawamori’s original vision, the project remains an elusive entry point for fans, often discussed in the context of the franchise’s experimental period rather than as a primary pillar of the official Macross timeline.
