Maesetsu! Opening Act

Maesetsu! Opening Act was produced by Studio Gokumi and AXsiZ and premiered in 2020 as an original anime project. The series centers on a group of young women striving to become professional comedians, exploring the demanding world of the Japanese manzai performance circuit. It was created in collaboration with Yoshitoshi Abe, who provided original character designs, aiming to capture the earnest, behind-the-scenes struggles of aspiring performers.

The production sought to ground the medium of the slice-of-life anime in the specific cultural context of Japanese comedy clubs. Despite the pedigree of its creative team, the series received a modest critical reception, often noted for its unconventional approach to the comedy genre and its focus on the procedural aspects of performance rather than purely comedic sketches. It remains a niche entry in the studio's catalog, reflecting their interest in character-driven narratives.
