Punie is next in line to become queen of Magical Land. However, she must spend a year on Earth before she can inherit the throne, so she transfers into a school in Japan. She's usually a sweet and gentle girl... that is unless someone does something to displease her, then she'll drop the act. She won't hesitate to whip out her magic stick and cheerfully rain bloody destruction down on the hapless fool, or barring that, simply use wrestling moves she calls "Submission" to punish them. Accompanied by her animal mascot Paya-tan, who makes regular attempts on her life (still bitter about being defeated and then forcibly recruited from Waku Waku Mascot Village), and forced to fend off random attacks by various people from her Kingdom who all have different reasons for wanting her dead, she must complete this year of training on Earth without fail.

Where it came from
Magical Witch Punie-Chan, known in Japan as Dai Mahō Tōge, originated as a manga series by Takashi Ikeda before being adapted into a two-episode original video animation by Studio diomedéa in 2006. The production emerged during a period of rising interest in deconstructive magical girl narratives, intentionally subverting the genre's tropes by pairing a sweet, pastel-aesthetic protagonist with extreme, hyper-violent slapstick humor. The title serves as a parody of traditional mahō shōjo tropes, contrasting the innocence of its visual design with the protagonist's ruthless dominance over her magical opponents.
The animation was directed by Tsutomu Mizushima, a filmmaker recognized for his distinct comedic timing and ability to blend disparate tones. The character design aimed for a classic 1990s anime aesthetic, which served as a deliberate visual anchor to heighten the impact of the jarring, sudden bursts of violence. Upon its release, the OVA gained a cult following for its unconventional delivery and dark humor, becoming a notable example of the surrealist comedy trend prevalent in mid-2000s Japanese animation.
