MAHOROBA

Mahoroba is a 2021 Japanese short film directed by Masahiro Sugano, produced in the wake of shifting social climates during the pandemic. The film was conceived as a meditation on the concept of 'mahoroba'—an archaic Japanese term describing a superlative, utopian location or a sanctuary that exists beyond the physical realm. The production sought to capture the ethereal nature of memory and landscape, utilizing minimalist cinematography to evoke a sense of longing for a home that may no longer exist in a tangible form.

The project was designed to emphasize atmospheric storytelling, drawing heavily on traditional Japanese aesthetics of impermanence and space. Sugano aimed to move away from conventional narrative structures, instead focusing on the interplay between environmental soundscapes and visual abstraction. Upon its release, the film was noted by critics for its meditative pace and the clarity of its vision, often highlighted at independent film festivals for its ability to distill complex emotional themes into a brief, visual poem.
