Provenance

Where it came from

The Mahjong Soul x Gintama collaboration preview was released in 2023 to promote a limited-time crossover event between the popular digital mahjong game Mahjong Soul and the long-running comedy manga and anime franchise Gintama. Produced by Bandai Namco Pictures, the studio responsible for the Gintama anime series, the ONA served as a promotional teaser to introduce fans to the integration of iconic Gintama characters into the game's virtual interface.

The design of the preview leans heavily into the meta-humor and fourth-wall-breaking style characteristic of the Gintama franchise. Directed with the signature comedic timing associated with the series, the piece was received as a nostalgic treat for the fanbase, blending the strategic gameplay elements of Mahjong Soul with the chaotic, irreverent antics of Gintoki Sakata and his associates. It successfully bridged the gap between a niche mobile game audience and a broad anime viewership.
