Where it came from
Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete, or Gushing over Magical Girls, originated as a manga series by Akihiro Ononaka before being adapted into an anime television series. The narrative subverts the traditional magical girl genre by centering on Utena Hiiragi, a fan who finds herself transformed into a villainous leader instead of a hero. The production of the second season follows the initial reception of the series, which gained a cult following for its unconventional blend of dark fantasy, parody, and provocative humor.
The animation direction for the series is handled by studios Asahi Production and Project No.9, with the project overseen by KADOKAWA as part of their broader anime portfolio. The visual style aims to balance the aesthetic tropes of the mahou shoujo genre with the comedic and surreal elements of the source material. Upon its release, the adaptation was noted for its willingness to lean into its niche premise, effectively establishing itself as a distinct entry within the contemporary landscape of anime comedies.
