Based on the first two volumes of Tachihara Ayumi's 50-part 1986 manga, serialized in Shounen Champion.
A young man who seems to be running lots of errands for his employer (or a Yakuza gang associated with his employer?). Odd errands, too. Meanwhile there's a sweet girl he's been dying to meet.

Where it came from
Maji, released in 1990, stands as a distinct entry in the Nippon Animation catalogue, emerging during a period when the studio was heavily focused on its World Masterpiece Theater series. As an original video animation, it allowed the creative team to explore themes and visual styles outside the constraints of their typical long-running television productions, reflecting a desire to test more experimental narrative structures within the mature ova market of the late eighties and early nineties.
The production utilized the studio’s traditional cel-animation techniques, leaning into the character-driven aesthetic that defined the studio's identity. While Nippon Animation is best known for literary adaptations, Maji serves as an example of their effort to diversify their portfolio. Upon release, it was met with a niche reception, largely appreciated by followers of independent Japanese animation who were seeking shorter, self-contained stories rather than the expansive multi-episode arcs that dominated the industry at the time.
