The snowy, ice-covered planet Coldfoot is home to a precious energy-rich ore called “Sig.” On the surface, the planet seems to be a crime-free utopia, but in reality prisoners are used for back-breaking Sig mining. Jim, a young prison guard, rushes to the site of a sudden mining accident to find a mysterious creature attacking the humans.

Where it came from
Make My Day, released in 2023 by 5 Inc., is a science fiction original net animation directed by Makoto Honda. The project was conceived as a high-concept survival thriller set on the icy, inhospitable planet Coldfoot, where mysterious creatures known as Sig escape from a sub-level mining facility. The production leans heavily into a dark, atmospheric aesthetic, utilizing a blend of 3D computer-generated imagery to emphasize the claustrophobic and harsh environment of the prison colony.
The narrative and visual direction were heavily influenced by Yasuo Ohtagaki, the manga artist renowned for his work on Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt. Ohtagaki contributed original character designs, aiming to evoke a gritty, lived-in feel for the protagonists trapped in the mining outpost. Upon its release on Netflix, the series was noted for its departure from traditional hand-drawn styles, though critical reception was mixed regarding the integration of its technical animation style with its survival-horror pacing.
