Where it came from
Makeruna! Makendo is a two-episode original video animation produced by the studio OLM and released in 1995. The series serves as an animated spin-off of the Makendo video game franchise, specifically adapting the lighthearted, martial-arts-themed aesthetic of the titles originally developed by Data East. The transition to animation was intended to capitalize on the cult success of the games, translating the protagonist's comical supernatural battles into a episodic format typical of the mid-1990s ova boom.
The character designs were handled to mirror the vibrant, exaggerated style of the source material, emphasizing the slapstick nature of the combat. While the series maintains a niche following among fans of 90s gaming adaptations, it was received as a light entertainment piece, primarily aimed at existing players of the franchise rather than the broader anime market. It remains a characteristic example of the period's trend of utilizing animated media to expand the reach of arcade and console gaming properties.
