Where it came from
Makeruna!! Aku no Gundan! originated as a gag manga series by the voice actor Aoi Shouta, serialized in Monthly Bushiroad starting in 2016. The story follows Don, an aspiring space conqueror, and his small crew of minions as they find themselves stuck on Earth and forced to integrate into mundane life after their ship crashes. The series is characterized by its absurdist humor and the contrast between the aliens' grand ambitions and their domestic struggles.
The 2017 television adaptation was produced by Tatsunoko Production, a legendary studio known for its deep history in anime. The adaptation utilizes a distinct, simplified visual style that mimics the original manga's charm, emphasizing expressive character silhouettes and rapid-fire comedic timing. Directed by Tsuyoshi Morita, the project was intended as a lighthearted, experimental short-form series that leaned into the voice acting talents of its creator, who provided the narration and voiced several characters to underscore the whimsical nature of the project.
