Where it came from
Makkuramori no Uta, or The Song of the Pitch-Black Forest, was produced by NHK for the long-running musical program Minna no Uta in 1984. It was created as a segment featuring a surreal, atmospheric animation style that departed from the traditional aesthetic of the series. The piece is remembered for its haunting, otherworldly quality which captivated a generation of viewers who encountered the short during its repeated broadcasts throughout the eighties.
The animation was directed by Tsuneo Gōda, who would later become widely known for the creation of Domo-kun. Gōda utilized a dark, slightly unsettling visual language to accompany the song, aiming to evoke the feeling of a mysterious, enchanted woodland. While its tone was notably darker than typical NHK children's programming, it achieved a cult status among fans of experimental animation for its unique artistic vision and distinctive, melancholic melody.
