Synopsis

On the 6th of August, 1945, an atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima. A young boy, Shigeru, left home for his job as a building excavator that morning, carrying a bento made by his mother, only to never return home again. Before long, his mother managed to find Shigeru's remains, and she noticed the completely black and carbonized bento box next to them.

This is an anime adaptation of the original book, "Makkuro na Obentou (The Charred Lunchbox)" written by Kodama Tatsuharu and illustrated by Kitajima Shinpei. The bento box that becomes the focus of the story is actually on display in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.

Provenance

Where it came from

Makkuro na Obentou, which translates to The Pitch-Black Lunchbox, was released in 1990 as a short film based on the children's picture book written by Hanako Muraoka. It emerged during a period of creative experimentation in Japanese animation, intended to translate the tactile, imaginative essence of picture books into a medium that appealed to both children and adults. The film is characterized by a deliberate, whimsical visual style that prioritizes narrative simplicity and emotional warmth.

The production was managed by the Studio Ghibli-affiliated team, following the studio’s tradition of focusing on the gentle, everyday magic of childhood experiences. The design and animation direction were aimed at maintaining the authentic look of the original illustrations, ensuring that the characters and settings felt like moving pages from a storybook. It was received as a modest, charming entry in the studio's broader catalog of short-form storytelling, celebrated primarily for its gentle pacing and nostalgic atmosphere.
