Where it came from
Makoto-chan is a 1980 animated film adaptation based on the long-running gag manga series by Kazuo Umezu. Produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha, the film was released during the height of Umezu’s popularity as a master of both horror and bizarre comedy. The narrative centers on the antics of the titular character, a young boy known for his erratic behavior and the iconic 'guwash' hand gesture that became a cultural phenomenon across Japan.
The character design stays faithful to Umezu’s distinctively grotesque yet whimsical artistic style, emphasizing exaggerated features and manic energy that define the source material. While the manga was celebrated for its subversion of traditional family dynamics and childish tropes, the transition to film was aimed at capturing the chaotic, slapstick spirit of the original serial. Upon release, it solidified the character’s place as a recognizable icon of Japanese pop culture, distinct from the artist's more terrifying contributions to the manga medium.
