Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari Cour 2

Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari, based on the manga series by Onigunso, made its transition to animation under the production of Bandai Namco Pictures, with Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions involved in the production committee. The second cour, airing in 2023, continues the narrative of Hyoma Kunato, a man burdened by past trauma involving tsukumogami, as he navigates a complex relationship with the spirit Botan Nagatsuki. The series serves as an exploration of traditional Japanese folklore through a contemporary lens, focusing on the coexistence between humans and spirits.

The production design reflects a careful effort to adapt the intricate character designs and spirit manifestations found in the original manga. Directed by Ryuichi Kimura, the series aimed to balance intense supernatural action sequences with character-driven drama. While the series maintains a niche following compared to major industry juggernauts, it was received as a faithful adaptation of Onigunso's work, praised by enthusiasts of the supernatural genre for its commitment to the source material's atmospheric and emotional stakes.
