Maku

Maku is a 2014 animated short film directed by Yoriko Mizushiri, an artist widely recognized for her distinct, tactile approach to animation. Produced during a period when Mizushiri was gaining international acclaim for her exploration of sensory experiences and human connection, the film was crafted to evoke physical sensations through minimalist visuals and rhythmic movement. It emerged from a body of work that emphasizes the interplay between body parts and everyday objects, reflecting the director's interest in the surreal qualities of domestic life.

The aesthetic of Maku is defined by its muted color palette and deliberate, flowing line work, which intentionally avoids traditional narrative structures in favor of atmospheric storytelling. Mizushiri’s design philosophy focuses on the loop as a mechanism to represent the cyclical nature of routine and comfort. Upon its release, the film was received as a significant contribution to contemporary experimental animation, garnering attention at numerous international festivals for its ability to communicate complex, abstract emotions through sparse imagery.
