Where it came from
Marriage of a Mouse, commonly known as Mouse's Wedding, is a classic work of Chinese animation produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio in 1983. Based on a traditional Chinese folk tale, the short film utilizes the intricate and culturally significant art of paper-cutting animation, a technique that the studio pioneered to bring static folk imagery to life on the screen.
The film was directed by Hu Jinqing, a master of Chinese silhouette and paper-cut animation whose work is celebrated for its elegance and faithfulness to traditional aesthetics. By utilizing layered paper cutouts and nuanced lighting, the design team aimed to evoke the spirit of rural Chinese festivals. Upon its release, it was received as a charming example of national style animation, praised for its rhythmic storytelling and its preservation of folklore for younger generations.
