Where it came from
The Mask of Zeguy, or Zeguy, is a two-episode original video animation (OVA) series released by Studio KSS in 1993. Emerging during the early 1990s boom of direct-to-video anime, the production was intended to capitalize on the popularity of dark fantasy and occult-themed stories that were frequent in the OVA market at the time. It centers on a supernatural mask that grants great power while exerting a malevolent influence over those who dare to don it.
The design and aesthetic of the project reflect the characteristic darker, high-contrast visual style favored by KSS productions of that era. While the series is often remembered by genre enthusiasts for its ambition, it was met with a lukewarm reception upon release. Critics and viewers generally pointed toward its disjointed narrative pacing and technical limitations, marking it as a quintessential example of the experimental, sometimes uneven landscape of 1990s niche anime.
