Masquerade is the story surrounding the Hiraga bloodline in which Gen is a part of. Recently orphaned, he moves in to his grandmother's house and unwittingly triggers the Hiraga clan's curse in which nearly every member leads a tragically short life. In his grandmother's house, Gen begins to unravel vaguely remembered memories from a dream he's always had. With the help of an American graduate student, they try to uncover the secret of the Hiraga bloodline, the whispered legend of immortality that is locked in his genes, and a way to keep Gen from sharing the same fate that every one of his ancestors before him has suffered.

Where it came from
Masquerade, released in 1998, is a two-episode original video animation (OVA) produced by the studio AIC. Arriving during a period when the studio was experimenting with darker, more mature narrative themes, the project serves as a representative example of late-90s direct-to-video anime production. Its aesthetic reflects the stylistic shifts of the era, focusing on atmospheric tension and character-driven drama that characterized much of the studio's portfolio at the turn of the millennium.
The creative direction for Masquerade was grounded in the conventions of the psychological thriller genre prevalent in the OVA market of the late 1990s. While AIC was widely known for its contributions to the mecha and sci-fi genres, this title was intended to showcase a more grounded, intimate approach to storytelling. Upon its release, it was received as a niche entry, largely catering to established fans of the studio’s output who were interested in the experimentation with darker subject matter and moody visual compositions.
