Where it came from
Me & Roboco was produced by Studio Gallop and premiered in 2023, based on the popular gag manga series by Shuhei Miyazaki serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump. The series centers on a future where domestic robotic maids known as OrderMaids are commonplace, focusing on the comedic life of Bondo Taira and his uniquely unrefined, muscular robot companion, Roboco. It was developed to capture the absurd, self-referential humor that defines the source material, often parodying common tropes found within the shonen manga genre.
The anime adaptation is noted for its visual style, which deliberately juxtaposes standard character designs with the exaggerated, hyper-detailed depictions of Roboco herself. Directed by Akitaro Daichi, the production aimed to replicate the manga's fast-paced, surreal comedy through creative animation techniques and comedic timing. Upon its release, it was received as a lighthearted, niche satire that resonated with audiences familiar with the high-stakes world of manga publishing and pop culture fandom.
