Legend has it that when you eat the flesh of a mermaid, you would live forever. Yuta and Mana are living proof of this... Together, they journey to various places trying to find meaning for their existence, or perhaps even a "cure" for their situation. One day, Yuta and Mana meet Masato, a little boy who seems terrified of his mother Misa. It seems to Yuta and Mana that mother and son have a very unusual relationship. What happens when Yuta and Mana decide to discover the dark secret Masato and Misa are hiding? And what about those monster-like creatures that have been appearing?

Where it came from
Mermaid's Scar, released in 1993, is a direct-to-video adaptation based on Rumiko Takahashi's dark fantasy manga series. Produced by Studio Madhouse, the OVA was created during a period when Takahashi’s more mature, horror-oriented works were being translated into high-quality animation for the burgeoning home video market, aiming to capture the visceral and melancholic atmosphere of the original source material.
The production was directed by Morio Asaka, who sought to translate the grotesque body horror and the somber, eternal loneliness of the characters into a cinematic format. The design leans heavily into the stark, shadowy aesthetic typical of 1990s adult-oriented anime, prioritizing a grounded, unsettling tone that departed from the more whimsical style often associated with the era’s popular comedies. Upon release, it was well-regarded by fans of the series for its faithfulness to Takahashi's tone and its stark visual storytelling.
