Where it came from
Mei King, released as a two-part original video animation in 1999, stands as a notable example of late-nineties digital animation experimentation by Studio Digital Works. During this era, Japanese studios were increasingly integrating early CGI elements into traditional cel-style animation, a transitional phase that defined the aesthetic of many niche sci-fi titles from the period.
The series focuses on the titular protagonist, Mei, navigating a surreal and technologically charged environment. While the production is often noted by enthusiasts for its unique visual approach and characteristic nineties character design, it remains a cult item within the animation underground, valued more for its historical representation of independent studio output than for mainstream critical acclaim.
