Mekakucity Records

Mekakucity Records is a major compilation album released in 2013, serving as a cornerstone of the Kagerou Project, a multimedia franchise created by the musician and novelist Jin. The project originated from a series of Vocaloid songs uploaded to the video-sharing platform Niconico, which gradually developed into an intricate narrative involving a group of teenagers with supernatural powers known as the Mekakushi Dan. The album acts as a bridge between the initial song releases and the subsequent light novel and anime adaptations, gathering fan-favorite tracks into a cohesive sonic narrative.

The album's design and aesthetic are deeply tied to the work of Shidu and Wannyanpu, the key illustrators who defined the project's visual identity. Their approach utilized a striking, high-contrast palette and stylized character portraits that became synonymous with the series' psychological, urban-fantasy tone. Upon its release, the album was well-received within the Japanese pop music scene, particularly among the Vocaloid community, for its successful transition from internet-based song releases to a polished, industry-standard commercial production that solidified the franchise's expansive lore.
