Where it came from
Mekakucity V's is a music video collection released in 2014, serving as a visual companion to the Kagerou Project, a multimedia franchise created by the Japanese musician and novelist Jin (Shizen no Teki-P). The collection features animated music videos that elaborate on the complex, interconnected narratives of the 'Mekakushi Dan,' a group of teenagers with supernatural eye-related abilities. These videos were produced by the animation studio Shaft and directed by Akiyuki Shinbo, known for his distinct, surreal aesthetic style.
The visual design of the collection leans heavily into the signature high-contrast, avant-garde style synonymous with Shaft productions, utilizing symbolic imagery and rapid editing to reflect the project's psychological themes. Upon its release, it was well-received by fans of the Vocaloid music scene and anime community for its cohesive art direction and its ability to synthesize Jin's narrative songs into a single visual journey, helping to solidify the Kagerou Project as a significant touchstone in 2010s Japanese web culture.
