Where it came from
Mermaid Forest was released in 1991 as an original video animation, serving as one of the earliest adaptations of Rumiko Takahashi's dark fantasy manga series, Mermaid Saga. Produced by Studio Pierrot, the project sought to translate the series' somber, gothic tone into animation. The narrative explores the folklore surrounding immortality gained through mermaid flesh, focusing on the protagonist Yuta's centuries-long search for a way to return to mortality.
The production leans into the atmospheric horror elements prevalent in late eighties and early nineties Japanese animation. By prioritizing a moody, grounded aesthetic over the lighter, comedic tropes Takahashi was often associated with at the time, the studio aimed to capture the visceral nature of the original source material. It remains a notable example of the era's experimentation with mature, episodic storytelling within the OVA format.
