Mermaid

The Mermaid title, often associated with the classic 1989 animated feature, emerged during the height of the Disney Renaissance. Produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation, the film was conceived to revitalize the studio's animation department, which had been struggling throughout the 1970s and 1980s. The project was spearheaded by Ron Clements and John Musker, who adapted Hans Christian Andersen’s dark fairy tale into a Broadway-style musical production that prioritized character-driven narrative and sophisticated orchestral arrangements.

The film's visual identity was heavily influenced by the work of supervising animator Glen Keane and production designer Michael Peraza Jr. They sought a lush, vibrant underwater aesthetic that balanced traditional cel animation techniques with emerging digital tools like the CAPS system. Upon its release, the film was both a critical and commercial success, largely credited with ushering in a decade of unprecedented creative and financial prosperity for Disney, effectively establishing the blueprint for the studio's animated output for years to follow.
