Midnight Eye Goku

Midnight Eye Goku was produced in 1989 by the legendary studio Madhouse, adapted from the seinen manga series created by Buichi Terasawa. Set in a futuristic, dystopian Tokyo, the story follows a private investigator named Goku Furinji who gains control over a rogue satellite capable of accessing any data network in the world. The OVA was a high-profile project for the studio, released during an era where Japanese animation was aggressively experimenting with cyberpunk themes, noir aesthetics, and intense, hard-boiled action narratives.

The animation was directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, a pivotal figure in the studio's history known for his distinct, sharp visual style and penchant for fluid, violent choreography. Kawajiri sought to emphasize the gritty, neon-soaked atmosphere of the original manga, resulting in a production that serves as a prime example of the late-eighties aesthetic. It was received as a stylish entry in the burgeoning direct-to-video market, praised by genre enthusiasts for its technical polish and its unapologetically dark, futuristic vision.
