Provenance

Where it came from

Midnight Eye Goku II was released in 1989 as a direct-to-video follow-up to the original cyberpunk OVA produced by Madhouse. Based on the manga series by Buichi Terasawa, the project was part of a late eighties trend of high-budget, gritty animation aimed at a mature audience. The sequel continued the narrative of Goku Furinji, a private investigator equipped with a cybernetic eye capable of accessing any computer network in the world, further cementing the franchise's reputation for blending detective noir with futuristic tech aesthetics.

The character design and visual direction reflect the distinct, angular style characteristic of Terasawa’s work, heavily influenced by Western hard-boiled detective fiction and science fiction tropes. Madhouse employed a polished cel-animation approach typical of the late OVA boom, emphasizing fluid action sequences and high-contrast lighting to underscore the dark, dystopian atmosphere. Upon release, the series was well-regarded for its technical prowess and ambitious animation quality, helping to define the look of nineties cyberpunk anime for international audiences.
