Synopsis

Comprised of 3 episodes that act simultaneously as a parody of other mecha anime and expand of the technology used in the Patlabor Series.

Episode 1 is a brief introduction to the weaponry carried by the Ingram, how it was designed and why it is the way it is.

Episode 2 looks at the design and maintenance of the Ingram 98 AV in SVU2 and takes a swipe at the marketing forces behind them (as in merchandising for the series).

Episode 3 is the only one to attempt to expand on a very minor point raised in the original TV show and just how SVU2 is actually funded.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Mini Pato series was released in 2002 as a lighthearted spin-off of the Patlabor franchise, produced by Production I.G. These short films originated as a way to explore the technical aspects of the Labor units within the universe through a playful, stylized lens. The series is particularly noted for its experimental use of cel-shaded 3D computer graphics, a pioneering choice at the time that aimed to capture the charm of miniature models coming to life.

The character designs and directing approach, led by Mamoru Oshii’s collaborative teams, were intended to deconstruct the mechanical realism of the Patlabor series into a comedic format. By focusing on the 'Mini-Pato' unit—a simplified, chibi-style version of the iconic AV-98 Ingram—the creators were able to engage in meta-humor and technical exposition that resonated with fans of mecha design. The series was well-received for its unique aesthetic and its ability to balance affectionate parody with a genuine appreciation for mechanical engineering.
