Provenance

Where it came from

Mirage of Blaze: Rebels of the River Edge, released in 2004, serves as a three-part original video animation series that acts as a direct sequel to the 2002 television anime adaptation of Mizuho Kusanagi’s light novel series. Produced by the acclaimed studio Madhouse, the OVA was created to expand upon the supernatural historical narrative established in the original series, which blends Sengoku-period drama with reincarnation and occult themes. The production team aimed to provide fans with a more focused, cinematic conclusion to the complex power struggles between the Uesugi and Takeda clans that define the source material.

The character designs for this adaptation are rooted in the distinct aesthetic established by the light novel illustrations, translated for the screen by Madhouse’s animation staff to maintain the series' signature dramatic and melancholic tone. Upon its release, the OVA was received primarily as a concluding chapter for the dedicated fanbase of the franchise, noted for its tighter pacing compared to the television series. It remains a hallmark of the studio’s early 2000s output, reflecting a specific period where light novel adaptations were becoming a more prominent fixture in the animation industry.
