Where it came from
Mirai Koushi SACLA: Harima Sakura was released in 2013 as part of a promotional campaign for the RIKEN SPring-8 Angstrom Compact Free Electron Laser (SACLA) in Hyogo, Japan. Produced by the animation studio Kamikaze Douga, the short was designed to translate the complex technical capabilities of the X-ray free-electron laser facility into an accessible, visually engaging narrative for a younger audience.
The character design and visual direction were crafted to embody the cutting-edge, futuristic spirit of Japanese scientific innovation. By utilizing the studio’s signature blend of 2D aesthetics and high-end 3D rendering, the production sought to bridge the gap between academic research and popular culture. It was well-received for its stylistic ambition, effectively positioning high-level scientific research within the vibrant context of modern digital animation.
