Where it came from
Mission-E was produced by Studio DEEN and aired in 2008 as a direct follow-up to the 2007 series Idolmaster: Xenoglossia, though it functions as an independent science fiction work. It emerged during a period when the studio was experimenting with genre-blending, combining themes of supernatural abilities with a backdrop of near-future Japanese urban development.
The series was directed by Hitoyuki Matsui, with character designs by Takuya Chanohara. The aesthetic sought to bridge the gap between gritty science fiction and character-driven drama, reflecting the studio's desire to capture a more mature demographic. Upon its release, it was met with modest attention, generally noted by critics for its distinct visual direction and its attempt to ground its superhuman premise within the bureaucratic structures of a fictionalized Tokyo.
