Where it came from
Mission of Darkness was released in 1997 by NuTech Digital during a period when independent animation studios were attempting to capitalize on the burgeoning direct-to-video market. The production emerged from a landscape of low-budget, experimental animation projects that sought to replicate the aesthetic appeal of popular sci-fi and action titles of the mid-nineties, often utilizing limited animation techniques to keep costs low while exploring dark, thematic narratives.
The project was designed with a focus on gritty, speculative fiction motifs, intending to appeal to audiences interested in the moody atmosphere characteristic of the era's cult anime and OAV releases. It remains a curiosity within the NuTech catalog, representing the studio's broader efforts to carve out a niche in the saturated home video market. Critics and viewers often view the work as a product of its time, notable more for its stylistic ambition than for technical polish.
