Childhood, upbringing, family background, social relations, traumatic experiences...
We keep reviewing and seeking out the motives of criminals, exploring the subtlest emotions driving them. It’s not to put ourselves in their shoes and sympathize, or even forgive them; it’s not to find some reasons to exculpate their crimes; it’s not to kneel down before the so-called "complexity of human nature"; nor to introspect social conflicts, much less to alienate ourselves into monsters.
We just want to have a fair trial – for ourselves and for those who still have hope for the world.

Where it came from
Mo Duzhe, also known as The Reader, is a Chinese web animation series produced by L² Studio. Adapting the popular danmei novel by Priest, the series is set against a sprawling, high-fantasy backdrop where supernatural investigations and complex political machinations intertwine. The production emerged from the growing trend of high-budget Chinese 3D animation, aiming to leverage advanced rendering techniques to capture the intense atmospheric and psychological depth found in the original source material.
The aesthetic design focuses on a sophisticated, semi-realistic art style intended to emphasize the gravity of the characters' interpersonal dynamics and the intricate world-building of the setting. Upon its release, the series was received as a technically ambitious project within the genre, praised by audiences for its visual fidelity and faithful adherence to the source novel's tonal complexity. It remains a notable entry in the evolution of contemporary Chinese digital animation studios.
