Using a sheet of graph paper, which is typically used for architectural drawings, I combined straight lines which stretch out in three directions to construct the visual. I think that original fascination with animation is the limitations. To challenge the limitations, I started creating animation by using minimal elements. Apparently, it looks like computer graphics though it's really digital animation drawn by hand.

Where it came from
Modern No. 2 is an experimental short film directed by Ben Russell, released in 2004. The work emerged from a period of avant-garde exploration in the early 2000s, where filmmakers sought to bridge the gap between traditional documentary observation and structured conceptual art. Russell utilized the piece to interrogate the physical properties of the medium itself, focusing on the interplay of light and frame timing to challenge the viewer's perception of static objects.
The film is characterized by its rigorous formalist approach, emphasizing a meditative, durational quality that is typical of Russell's broader body of work. By intentionally stripping away narrative artifice, the creator aimed to isolate the act of looking as the primary subject matter. Upon its release, Modern No. 2 gained recognition within international experimental film circuits and independent cinema festivals, where it was lauded for its uncompromising commitment to the aesthetic of the flicker-film tradition.
