Mobile Police Patlabor REBOOT

Mobile Police Patlabor REBOOT was produced in 2016 by Studio Khara as part of the Japan Animator Expo project. Created to celebrate the legacy of the Patlabor franchise, the short film was intended to showcase a modern technical approach to the classic series, blending high-fidelity computer-generated imagery with the mechanical aesthetic that defined the original 1980s and 90s designs. It serves as a standalone proof of concept rather than a traditional sequel.

Directed by Yasuhiro Yoshiura, the film was designed to bridge the gap between traditional cel-style animation sensibilities and contemporary digital workflows. Yoshiura aimed to evoke the gritty, grounded realism of the early Patlabor works while pushing the visual fidelity of the Labors themselves. Upon its limited theatrical release and digital debut, the short was praised by critics and long-time fans for its meticulous mechanical animation and successful attempt to modernize a beloved cult classic without losing its distinct personality.
