Mobile Police Patlabor: WXIII

Released in 2002, WXIII: Patlabor the Movie 3 serves as the third cinematic installment in the influential Mobile Police Patlabor franchise. The production was spearheaded by Bandai Visual and produced by the studio Madhouse, marking a shift in tone and staff from the previous films directed by Mamoru Oshii. The project emerged during a period of experimentation for the series, aiming to pivot from the grand political conspiracies of the earlier films toward a more grounded, investigative procedural that leaned into the body-horror and sci-fi monster tropes of the era.

The film was directed by Fumihiko Takayama and Takuji Endo, with character designs rooted in the aesthetic established by Akemi Takada. The narrative focuses on two detectives, Kusumi and Hata, rather than the core Section 2 pilots, which drew a mixed reception from long-time fans who expected a focus on the familiar mecha ensemble. Despite the departure in thematic focus and the challenges of its fragmented production history, the film is often recognized for its technical animation quality and its commitment to the gritty, cyberpunk-inflected atmosphere that defined the franchise's cinematic outings.
