Mobile Police Patlabor: The New Files

Mobile Police Patlabor: The New Files, released in 1990, serves as a direct follow-up to the original seven-episode OVA series that launched the franchise. Produced by Studio Deen and Tohokushinsha Film, these additional episodes were created to bridge the gap between the initial OVA run and the subsequent television series. The narrative maintains the grounded, near-future realism of the Patlabor universe, focusing on the daily operations and technical challenges faced by the Special Vehicles Section 2 of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police.

The design and production were heavily influenced by the vision of Mamoru Oshii and the creative collective Headgear, who sought to blend police procedural drama with mecha realism. By emphasizing the logistics, maintenance, and political bureaucracy inherent in operating giant robots, the series distinguished itself from the more fantastical mecha anime of the era. The New Files were well-received by fans for their commitment to the established aesthetic and for deepening the character dynamics that had been carefully cultivated in the preceding installments.
