Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt: Bandit Flower

Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt: Bandit Flower was released in 2017 as a cinematic compilation and expansion of the second season of the original net animation series. Produced by Sunrise, the film condenses the events of the Thunderbolt arc while incorporating new sequences that deepen the narrative conflict between the Earth Federation and the South Seas Alliance. It represents a stylistic departure from the main Gundam timeline, opting for a gritty, jazz-infused aesthetic that emphasizes the psychological toll of war on its protagonists.

The film's visual identity was heavily influenced by the work of Yasuo Ohtagaki, whose original manga serves as the source material. The production team aimed to maintain the high-detail mechanical designs and atmospheric lighting established in the first season, focusing on a sense of claustrophobia and tactical realism. Upon its release, it was noted for its distinct departure from the typical heroic tone of the franchise, receiving acclaim for its focused storytelling and the technical proficiency of its animation studio.
