Where it came from
Mobile Suit Gundam: Twilight AXIS was released in 2017 as a series of short ONA episodes, produced by Sunrise. It is based on the novel series written by Kōjirō Nakamura and illustrated by Ark Performance, set within the Universal Century timeline. The story takes place a few months after the events of Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, focusing on a team tasked with investigating the wreckage of the asteroid base Axis.
The production sought to explore the remnants of the Zeon movement through a grounded, investigative lens, distinct from the grand space warfare typical of the franchise. By integrating the mechanical designs of Ark Performance, the project aimed to provide a detailed look at mobile suit technology in the post-Unicorn era. While it serves as a narrative bridge, it is noted for its experimental short-form storytelling approach within the broader Gundam canon.
