Where it came from
Monkey Peak, or Saru Lock, originated as a suspense-horror manga series written by Koji Shinasaka and illustrated by Akihiro Kumeta. The story follows a group of employees on a company hiking trip who encounter a mysterious and lethal primate-like creature in the mountains. Its transition to an ONA format in 2018 was produced by Tomovies, aiming to capture the visceral, high-stakes tension of the source material through a distinct, stylized animation approach that emphasizes the isolation of the characters.
The adaptation was notable for its specific aesthetic choices, which leaned into a dark, gritty atmosphere to mirror the psychological unraveling of the characters as they struggle for survival. While the manga gained a reputation for its intense survival horror tropes and shifting moral landscape, the ONA served to introduce the franchise to a broader audience, focusing on the suspenseful pacing that characterized the original work's most harrowing chapters.
