Monkey Punch no Sekai: Alice

Monkey Punch no Sekai: Alice was released in 1991 as an original video animation produced by Toho. The project served as a creative showcase for the distinctive aesthetic of Monkey Punch, the pen name of Kazuhiko Kato, who is globally recognized as the creator of the Lupin III franchise. This production sought to adapt the surreal, adult-oriented humor and erotic sensibilities often present in Kato’s wider body of manga work beyond his most famous heist series.

The animation reflects the loose, expressive linework characteristic of Kato's signature style during the late eighties and early nineties. By focusing on the character Alice, the narrative explores dark, fantastical themes common in the seinen manga magazines of the era. While it did not reach the mainstream cultural ubiquity of the Lupin III anime films, it remains a notable artifact for collectors interested in the evolution of Kato’s personal artistic vision and the specific experimental atmosphere of the Japanese direct-to-video market during that period.
