Balsa’s prowess in battle is legendary, but the weight of death bears heavily on the spear-wielding mercenary’s soul. To atone, she has sworn to save 8 lives, no matter what the cost, and now only one life remains. Prince Chagum has been blessed with the power to stave off the droughts that threaten to starve and destroy his father’s empire, but he has been accused of being possessed by evil spirits, and court officials have set his own father against him. Condemned to death, he is saved by Balsa’s intervention and now, together, the two must unravel the secret of Chagum’s powers and the spirit behind them… before the armies sent to murder them can succeed!

Where it came from
Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit was produced in 2007 by the acclaimed studio Production I.G, adapting the first novel in the series by Nahoko Uehashi. The series was directed by Kenji Kamiyama, who sought to translate the novel's deliberate, grounded world-building into a sophisticated fantasy epic. Departing from the common tropes of the genre, the production emphasized intricate cultural anthropology and a mature narrative focus on the relationship between Balsa, a wandering spear-wielder, and the young prince she is sworn to protect.
The visual design of the series was lauded for its cinematic quality, balancing high-stakes action choreography with quiet, atmospheric landscapes. The character designs maintained a realistic aesthetic that mirrored the series' themes of responsibility and identity. Upon its release, Moribito was received as a high-water mark for television animation, praised by critics for its narrative depth and the technical excellence that has become the hallmark of Production I.G's work.
