Where it came from
Mori no Kuma-san, or The Bear in the Forest, is a beloved Japanese nursery rhyme adapted from the American folk song The Other Day I Met a Bear. It was popularized by NHK through its long-running children's music program Minna no Uta, which has served as a cultural institution for introducing illustrated musical storytelling to Japanese households since the 1960s.
The NHK production is recognized for its whimsical, gentle animation style that reflects the network's commitment to educational yet entertaining broadcasting. The design choice to focus on a playful, non-threatening bear encounter emphasizes the song's themes of wonder and gentle surprise, becoming a staple of childhood nostalgia in Japan.
