Where it came from
Moshi Boku ga, which translates to 'If I were,' is a distinct animated project produced by NHK. The series emerged from NHK's long tradition of creating educational and experimental short-form programming designed to challenge the perspectives of younger audiences. By utilizing surrealist imagery and reflective narration, the production sought to explore themes of identity and empathy, encouraging viewers to step into the lives of others to better understand the nuances of the human experience.
The visual language of the project reflects the hallmark aesthetic of NHK’s creative arm during its experimental period, prioritizing minimalist character design and symbolic background art over traditional cel-shaded animation. The creative team aimed for an understated, contemplative atmosphere that would resonate with both children and adults. Upon its release, it was noted for its departure from typical broadcast tropes, earning praise for its quiet, artistic contribution to the network’s cultural archives.
