Provenance

Where it came from

Morizo and Kikkoro originated as the official mascots for Expo 2005, held in Aichi, Japan. Designed by illustrator Toshio Iwai, the characters were intended to embody the themes of nature and environmental harmony that defined the exposition's 'Nature's Wisdom' concept. Their simple, forest-spirit aesthetics were crafted to be approachable and gentle, reflecting traditional Japanese folklore motifs interpreted through a modern, minimalist design lens.

Following their debut at the World Expo, Nagoya TV Housou produced a short-form animated television series in 2004 to build anticipation and deepen the public's emotional connection to the characters. The series explored the quiet adventures of the two forest dwellers, further cementing their status as cultural icons in Japan. The reception was overwhelmingly positive, leading to significant commercial success and widespread use of the mascots in Japanese public infrastructure and environmental awareness campaigns long after the exposition concluded.
