Where it came from
Released in 2017, Mountain is a cinematic collaboration between director Jennifer Peedom and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. The film was conceived as a companion piece to Peedom’s earlier work, Sherpa, aiming to capture the sheer majesty and existential pull of the world’s highest peaks. Narrated by Willem Dafoe, the documentary functions as a tone poem, blending breathtaking cinematography of mountaineers with a sweeping orchestral score to explore why humans are so relentlessly drawn to such dangerous and inhospitable environments.
The film’s design is defined by its sensory approach, prioritizing visceral visuals and auditory immersion over traditional narrative structure. Peedom worked closely with cinematographer Renan Ozturk to curate footage that emphasizes the verticality and isolation of the landscape. Upon its release, it received widespread acclaim for its technical ambition and its philosophical meditation on the human spirit, with critics particularly noting how the absence of heavy exposition allowed the natural grandeur of the mountains to remain the primary subject.
