Where it came from
Released in July 2001, Motto! Ojamajo Doremi: Kaeru Ishi no Himitsu serves as the first feature film adaptation of the popular magical girl anime series produced by Toei Animation. It was launched during the Toei Anime Fair, a recurring summer event designed to showcase theatrical outings for their current television properties, and focuses on a self-contained narrative involving a mysterious frog stone that tests the bonds of the protagonists.
The film was directed by Shigeyasu Yamauchi, a veteran of the Toei stable known for his distinctively fluid and sometimes abstract approach to animation timing and layout. By emphasizing the friendship themes central to the series' core, the production team aimed to provide a cinematic experience that resonated with the younger television audience while maintaining the bright, whimsical aesthetic that character designer Yoshihiko Umakoshi established for the franchise.
